Dave's background in the education setting...
Dave began his career in education as an Academic Mentor and subsequently worked as an Achievement and Pastoral Manager. In these roles Dave became skilled in building positive and professional relationships with students from various backgrounds, especially with those who are at risk of under-achievement. He also facilitated Anger Management Programmes which engendered positive self-esteem and confidence in students from challenging circumstances. Dave had the privilege of working with various departments and the Senior Leadership Team at an inner city secondary school, actively managing behaviour and raising achievement
As Dave's career progressed he became BESD Manager, where he provided professional leadership to a team of staff and managed support, care and guidance to students with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. Dave worked collaboratively with the School Leadership Team, the Inclusion Team, the Director of the Student Support Learning Community, Alternative Learning Providers and other agencies, to engender many changes within the Learning Support Unit (LSU), he’s seen many students with BESD achieve beyond what is often expected. Underpinning it all is Dave's belief that all students need the challenge to succeed and the chance of achieving that success. He believes students need to be treated as individuals, meaning that their individual needs must be identified and met as effectively as possible. Students need to feel secure, yet challenged and motivated. Working with the Inclusion Committee Dave put in place a system for referral of students needing LSU support. Expectations were established and discipline, sanctions and rewards were introduced through a carefully devised Discipline & Reward Structure. There was a clear correlation between positive behaviour and this system, students were motivated by reward and success whilst also being very clear what the consequences were for failing to keep to the high expectations that were set.
In 2011 David became an accredited 'Assertive Discipline Trainer' and took on a new role as 'Behaviour for Learning Manger'. Dave has experience of establishing Parent Support Programmes as well as KS3 Intervention Programmes, with a view to giving targeted students a short period of intense support, to equip them with the skills to manage their own behaviour more effectively and to raise their self esteem. Workshops in the programme include; anger management and social skills, skills for life and the 'Urban Music Project' (which Dave created himself).
Dave is passionate about seeing effective relationships developed between students and teachers. High expectations need to be set and shared by all staff and consistency is key to the successful implementation of of any Behaviour For Learning Policy. It is clear that even the most challenging students over time respond more positively when boundaries are set and a consistent, clear and fair approach is taken, this fosters a learning environment where success can be achieved. In addition to delivering workshops, contributing to the school INSET programme and the Induction programme for new staff and NQTs, Dave also has experience of supporting individual teachers, offering training and advice on how to handle the situations they find themselves in with regard to classroom management. David's varied experience enables him to bring insight into situations where issues have arisen between a member of staff and a student. David supports staff sensitively, fostering a climate where need for support is not seen as a weakness but instead an opportunity for improvement and success. Dave is extremely committed to effective team working and encourages mutual respect between those he works with. Dave believes that effective Behaviour for Learning is achieved through staff at all levels working together towards the same goal. Dave is always keen to further develop his own skills, knowledge, experiences and qualifications to maximise his potential in order to bring all that he can to the roles he undertakes.
Dave has also been a Governor at a local Primary School. Whilst having involvement in the overall governance of the school he was also particularly involved in the area of 'Pupils, Personnel & Curriculum'.
